Known Criminals On the Street Early?
Posted By dlwalsh on April 4, 2008
It's a smart strategy. The prisons are way over-crowded
I think "they" lock people up way too easily, and the prisons are way too full of people that shouldn't be there.

I am reminded of a comment from decades ago that given the current trends only crooks wouldn't be in prison. Low level drug offenses account for a huge number of the beds filled in prisons. My concern, though, is that these release programs won't do a good job of differentiating the low risk with the high risk inmate.
almost a 50/50 discussion since character of prison's population to evaluate...is what should be discussed...severity of crimes..etc
Once again, it all starts at home. If people would take responsibility for themselves and their kids we'd have less crime and less doin' time...I've seen people go to prison for the MOST ridiculous things and others NOT do time when they should. The whole system
is flawed, but it's the best one we have.
I would hate to see violent criminals put on the streets, but why don't we try to rehabilitate some of these people? Sitting in prison just teaches them how to be better criminals. Very few learn from their experience.
Take the ones that can be reformed and reform them. Leaving room for the rest
that are a danger to others.
If they can tell me that they have a Pshychologist or panel that is worth anything that can help to evaluate these ones to just be set free, than that is better than nothing. If it is a matter of just 'you, you, you, and oh you, come with me, you're free' then no. But we are paying a high price for people in our prisons and that has to stop. How do I think that will happen? If there are more places in our country that handle it like Sherrif Joseph Arpaio in Arizona. Then we won't have much of this issue.

This is a really bad idea. "Lets dirty the streets for money.."
I wholeheartedly agree with "a life for a life". How many people cheered when a dictator was hanged recently?
Put yourself in the shoes of a victims family. They have paid, in grief, for the loss of their loved one, and will continue to do so. Now the family are paying for the one responsible to have a bed and be fed via the taxes they are dutifully paying. Is this right?
Just get it over and done with. That would free up some prison space.
Just something I found in today's newspaper which illustrates what this discussion is about. I hope it works for you.

On the surface, the idea seems like one that could work to reduce the short term costs in a bad economy. From what I've seen prisons do very little to rehabilitate and are simply housing criminals until they get out and re-offend. So might as well set them free, for the little while they are likely to remain out of jail.
The problem is the lack of differentiation between non-violent and violent criminals. A burglar or a low level drug dealer is one thing, but a armed robber or rapist? That's just asking for trouble and a huge spike in violent crime. Won't that just transfer the expense from the prison system back onto police forces?
I certainly don't want known criminals released early. They did the crime, make them do the time.
Look at how many known sex offenders have been released on parole recently only to go out and either rape or kill innoceent children.
If the prisons need more money, send out the prisons to pick fruits and vegetables, etc. That would also help the illegal immigration problem.
The state could keep that money which would help to pay for their "room and board".
Also, who cares about prisoners rights? Why do they get TV, educations, etc. at taxpayers expense? Cut out all of those programs that give prisoners bennies and that would save a lot of money.
Sorry about that above. Here is the link, which I believe, illustrates the problems of releasing violent criminals, especially murderers.

We all have to take into consideration that this "law" is only going to be enforced by how the BOP views it. Pay more attention to the entire "law" and it really is not going to make a damn bit of difference.
I honestly think that they don't put enough people in prison.
-- Posted By deepdope on April 4, 2008Maybe low-level drug offenses are a little crazy, but there a are a lot of drug dealers selling drugs to kids in there too. How crazy would it be to release them for money?
But I like the idea of taking an island that the US owns somewhere in the world. Then take these criminals to the island. Drop them off and let them take care of each other..Or have them under the Military training program. Let the Military hold them in a captive camp, have them grow the food they need, and basically work to provide a society for themselves. Maybe they learn to get along and realize, we're all in this life together.
Of all the reasons for getting people out of prison that don't belong there, saving taxpayer money is the least important from a moral standpoint.
The bleeding heart liberals would have you believe that all of these people are innocent, just because DNA in the last 10-15 years has proven a small minority (even on death row) innocent, they believe they all need to be released. Hogwash, and baloney!
The majority of them that get out are not rehabilitated, and go back and do the same crimes over again, sometimes multiple times (be it murder again, rape, drunk driving, etc.)
I'm for the death penalty, because it would prevent murderers from killing again, and would decrease the murder rate incredibly. and NO, I'm not for appealing 10, 20, 30 years for murderers, rapists, pedophiles, etc., because this just ties up the courts and costs tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions of dollars.
