Are 4-day workweeks a good idea? Utah is going to do it..
You would work 10 hours a week Monday through Thursday, but get Friday off. What do you think?

Better Balance

Excellent Idea. Why didn't we do this before?
I totally agree with this if the production of the work week can be done in 4 days instead of 5 it will help everyone with not only the high prices of gas but employee missing less work.

I have worked in environments where the only criteria for success seems to have been the ability to fill in time-sheets. The fact that I could start early and work in a concentrated way to get the job done often counted for nothing as colleagues who played the clock-in game were rwarded just as well.
This would save a ton of gas and energy. Not to mention, workers would be much more rested.
I hope they do it where I live.
This should have been done when the gas was creeping up around $3.50. I am lucky and I asked my boss if I could work from home and when he needed me to come to do work all he had to do was call. So really I could only be going into the office about twice a week.
It would take some time to get used to but a 4day work week will help greatly with leaving work at work and enjoying time at home.
I have always been in favour for fitting work around time available instead of squeezing my free time into some arbitrary schedule. Our ideas of self worth/esteem are often entangled with what we do to earn a living. I prefer more time to be rather than to be a drudge

I think it is great, if it can save gas, and they can get the work done in four days. They are even making exceptions for police, those in the courts, and other really needed people. In the factory where I work, some work seven days a week. That's not good for familes or one's health. I only volunteer for Saturdays when I really need the money, never for Sundays.
Its some exciting news people have got there in utah , normally a workweek , depends upon the potential of the related personnel and upon how much he can contribute at within that time , but it surely cuts of some jingles in the pocket , but being a 4 day workweek one can be more creative and opt for a spectrum of all odd jobs one can attend to , its really an exciting information,..
My office recently gave us the option of working 4 -10 hr days and I jumped at the opportunity. I love it! I feel like I have gained a whole extra day, not to mention the gas money I am saving. It did take some getting use to; at first the days seemed very long. And I understand that it is not for everyone. But overall, it is a great way to create more of a work/home balance and I encourage anyone who can to check it out.
This is an excellent concept, not new by any means though. Europeans have had this schedule available to it's workers for centuries. Just goes to show how far ridiculously stubborn us Americans are. Great Idea now to get your boss to go for it.
I currently work 40+ hours a week. It would be great to have a four day work week. The benefits are far greater than one could imagine. Being able to plan your week would be easier if you had three extra days to play around with. This would be a great way to inspire employees too. They would look forward to having their days. It would probably keep them happy.
If we work four days a week then what's going to happen to " I Hate Mondays Cat " poster? What type of cruel government would take away my right to complain about not having enough days? good idea thought but not if they take away benefits for youto have it.
I have previously worked 4 day work weeks and think they are wonderful! I used to work 4, 10 hour days at one job, then have a day off, then work two 12 hour days at another. It was a lot of work, but I loved being able to work 65 hours a week with one day off still!
For those who don't work that much, 4 day work weeks offer a 3 day weekend (every weekend) and more time out of the office. I definitely support it!
This would obviously save you two trips to/from the office, not to mention the savings in fuel and similar costs.
I personally work close to 9 hours every day, so it would not hurt. It would also improve the lifestyle of all participants, since they would have more time to spend with the family.
With soaring gas prices it makes more sense to only commute 4 days instead of 5. If I am already at work, I would rather tack on another couple of hours to not work on Friday!! I am already there for crying out loud. Also too think about how much more time people would get with their families and things!
For staffing reasons, not everyone would be able to have the dream Mon - Thu schedule. However, having the extra day off in the work week is a great benefit.
Also, you end up working a little less since you get three breaks instead of only two.
We work more hours than many European countries with less vacations. At least it would seem like we had more time off with this system.
I like the idea of a four day work week. I find that once I am 'into something' I hate to leave it incomplete and have to come back the next day. It will be especially beneficial for my tutoring. I will be able to work with students during the day instead of after a day of school. Now we just have do to something about the busing thing so students do not have to have such a long day on their four day week.
I think having Wednesday off would be a better alternative. This way things can be accomplished during business hours (bank etc) and you can truly plan your weekends for rest and fun or whatever else is required for balance...but no errands or chores and finally being able to enjoy 2 days off would be great. If we had friday off, yes, the thought of three day weekends are exciting but from experience we just add and extra day of chores and still have not got out and had fun...so wednesday it is.
this idea help to spend enough time with family, which is important for the sustain the society too long, healty&happy people increse the production capacity too when they get enough rest.it can save gas also
I think a 10 hr workday 4 days/week would make me overall more productive and more happy overall. I'd vote for that in a heartbeat.
I definitely like this as an option, in fact, it's how my dad's office in Houston runs. It would be nice if people had a choice of either schedule, and I hope that employers allow either option. But I can't see what the supposed downside is: everyone works the same number of hours and gets the same pay. It would even give parents a day to themselves, as I would expect kids would still be in school during Friday -- which means a day without work /or/ the kids. I have a lot of friends who would /love/ that!
If it were made a choice where I work, I'd jump at 4 10-hour workdays a week. Our kids only go to school Monday through Thursday, so it would work out just fine.
To me, psychologically, it would be a morale booster to have that extra day during the week. Plus with the economy currently in the toilet, this is a big money saver on gas.
I, personally would love to have a 4 day work week. It fits perfectly with my type of job, and I could definitely use three days off in a row each week to recover from the work week as well as to be able to do weekend traveling trips. I do realize, however, that this doesn't work for every profession or lifestyle. This would be more difficult for people with more strenuous jobs or for people with children and families. I think it should be able to vary depending on the profession.
